stories:

2 April 04 - h&s played tonight at St. Paul's Underground in Lincoln, and it is our best show. some moments include...

- discovering St. Paul's parking garage - perfect, because this show holds the absolute record for most-h&s-gear-taken.
- an audience of many friends, some family, and a few new faces.
- better-than-average stage banter.
- big "astroblue" jam during soundcheck.
- most effortless-feeling rock show yet - it's hard, we're doing so many things to make all the right sounds. scottie and i were in the same groove all night.
- amazing tone in the house... there is nothing like when a band sounds good.
- playing old songs "Broken Anger" (electric), "Under My Protection," and "Just Around the Corner."
- "Tired Chords" acoustic.
- "Houston" and "E. Morning (Ressurection)" electric.
- fulfilling my rock fantasy of people standing in the front and jumping ("After the Countdown")
- covering DMB's "#41" with tim jensen on djembe for old times' sake.
- friends moving their chairs up close for the acoustic set.
- first-ever piano performances of "What Sounds Are Real?," and "Choose To"
- the seconds of silence after "Another Song About Falling (Staircase)."
- help loading equipment!

scott had a flat tire on the way home.

i'm having a 3 a.m. bowl of honeycombs. -h

May 2003 - howie interviewed by Brook Ruhter of the Doane Owl

Brook: Do you feel that music is a good way to express political feelings or statements?

howie: Absolutely. Music is a good way to express everything! But we humans are all political creatures - an artist's politics are always in their music, whether they are explicit or implicit. Sometimes by saying nothing, you say something. A song is a great way to ask a question or point out something in a medium that can potentially reach many people, and help them see a new point of view or encourage them to hold their position, and know why they hold it. I express myself politically in the music I write - sometimes very clearly, sometimes in vague or disguised language.

B: Have you written any material that does just that (express political feelings or statements)?

h: Yes. One song from howie&scott's first album, called "Mightier Than The Sword," is a very strong statement in favor of words over war, diplomacy over violence, from a very personal to an international level. When we play it, I occasionally improvise new lyrics to fit a particular situation that is on my mind or my audience's mind. My newer work is not as explicitly political, but the core outlook is definitely still present. I did write a new song before the war with Iraq, but we haven't performed it because I haven't taught Scott how it goes. Its more lyrically subtle, but still a criticism of President Bush. I compare his approach to foreign policy to Texas high school football - hilarious mayhem ensues!

B: How do you feel about nationally known artists who have released political songs?

h: More power to them! If an artist has a platform from which to speak, they are free to speak about what they choose. Now, nobody is obligated to listen to, play, or buy their music - so there might be a business risk - but who knows? It could pay off too. There's also a little thing called artistic integrity. I create what I create - only when something is finished do I ask what I should do with it. Should I publish the song, or perform it, or keep it for myself & my friends? Each artist has to answer.

B: What about censorship that some politically active artists have faced due to their political expressions?

h: Its too bad, but as far as I know it's legal. I don't think its "censorship" in the proper sense, that government is keeping these artists from releasing their political messages. Its more of a self-censorship of the population, which is really even more dangerous - a few people who operate big media outlets (Clear Channel radio, MTV, etc) make decisions about what kinds of messages all Americans will hear - and these few have their own interests to promote that are not necessarily the interests of you or me.

B: How has the war affected you as an artist?

h: The war doesn't affect my art directly - the war affects me, and then I create art. The war has made me distrust the current administration, it has made me feel like I need to stand up for oppressed people, stand up for right and good and sanity in this world that our policies are turning crazy. And they are OUR policies now, stolen election or not - if we don't like them, we need to elect people who will change the path we are on. All of this stuff is part of my reaction to the war - it changes who I am - and I (being the person to creates my art) write songs that reflect this. I write songs that hopefully encourage other people to think and reflect for themselves, and introduce them to a progressive way of thinking about the world. I try to be enlightening and encouraging and loving in my songs, whether I'm talking about a dream I had or want to have or the nightmare the troops and citizens alike are experiencing in Iraq right now. Its not pleasant stuff, and that's present, but I think there's a way out too and I think we can be good and faithful people and I try to always come back to that.

October 02 - howie's (r)ocktober tour diary

#1. WEEKEND AT KANSAS. that was the weekend that was... besides the music, i have to say that the highlight of the weekend was giving The Shaft a sound defeat at 2-on-2 Ultimate Frisbee in the vacant lot next to the bar. whatever else you might think about us, scott and i are hell to beat on the Ultimate Frisbee field (at least now we know that). or maybe the chicken fried steak in manhattan was better than even the sweet sweet taste of victory... either way, when it comes to playing music we mean business and kansas had to learn that lesson the hard way. Driving back to Crete for church on sunday morning was no treat either, caffiene is a drug and its good to stop driving in thunderstorms (we learned that one the easy way, and i'm damned happy about it). plus opening up the tour at home was a special treat - there is no better way to begin anything than with family and friends. i have only today really felt back from the first weekend, and i have a show tonight with Shacker, and we're off again to lincoln and omaha. hope to see you soon. -h

#2. THE KNEE OF THE CURVE. this has been a monster weekend... in addition to the (r)ocktober shows, i played last wednesday and again friday with shacker. a bit of an implosion on friday night late, what with the place under police watch and all. saturday in the park with all the skater kids was some of the best fun i've ever had in music. and the rediscovery of "long train" in 6/8 and 4/4... simultaneously! and saturday night up in the old market... forget dual EP, this is double-live with AGTS and h&s. for those of you who missed omaha this weekend - what you missed indeed was three brothers, two bands and one energy that spun the whole night around. sunday choral concert here at the college, and trashed voice + all we made it thru. last night (mon) at church, in the A.R.C. which is one of the more beautiful rooms we've ever played. can't wait to see you westerners on fri/sat and have a little break from class! all we do is go to class and rock anymore, it seems. time to cut class. -h

#3. GO WEST, YOUNG MEN, AND ROCK. arrival in Hastings to a rematch of band ultimate frisbee and buffalo burgers on the grill... chill in the air and we hit the Blue Moon for a rocker. thanks to all who came and saw Rob's rockstar guitar switch. i spent the night with rob's fish (pillow - don't interrupt!) and we mastered week #2's recordings all night and all day. finished with a party of a show. highlights include scaring the socks off a couple of stoner kids with a from-hell version of "happy happy joy joy." drove that night further west to Holdredge (accompanied by mini OREO's) to be with some friends and take a little break. all in all, a great visit. its always nice to see a band in their hometown. -h

#4. LEAVE A DUSTY POST-NUCLEAR AFTERMATH AND JACKET. only one show this final weekend, but we packed it with quality rocking like naught before. 10 minutes before Fiber Optic Pumpkin (myself and Rob playing Shaft songs and covers and being funny) went on the show looked pretty slim... but a bunch of friends walked in and the energy shot thru the roof. sorry for the confusing ending to those in attendance - it came to me at the moment, and i thought i'd try it. driving home thru wahoo so rob could pick up his jacket we left there earlier that afternoon. the revolution begins anew... major and minor, the band plays on. -h

24 July 02 - a quick story... a week ago, scott and i were driving home from a show when we started writing a punk song in the car. we stopped at the DQ in wahoo to sit outside and figure it out, but there were some kids there so we impressed them by playing "mabel." then we decided we could get free ice cream by playing for the DQ workers (it was pretty late) so we ran in there, jumped onto the freezer, and rocked "the middle." and verily, they gave us free cookie dough blizzards. who said punk rock never put food on the table!?!?!?!?!
