Trying to add a washy layer of noise to a track the other night (working title “house” from Dharmic Beams 2 & 3), I stumbled onto something much, much cooler.
This is a Korg SQ-1 sequencer connected via a crude, alligator-clipped-in slew circuit to a radio modified for voltage control. Can use the buttons and knobs to change the station, basically.
Musically, I only ended up using three of the sequencer’s steps, set to noise, a station, and different noise. In my song I performed the sequencer live like a keyboard, staying mostly on noise but hitting the station in the gaps between my vocal for some call-and-response. Some editing and effects, and it sounds pretty cool! Definitely more interesting than the ambient wash I was originally planning.
I think this won’t be the last appearance of this little setup.
