  • March & April Releases

We’re excited to announce sophomore releases from both White Air and Panda Face in the coming months:

    • Panda Face’s Up In Space will drop on Saturday, March 12.  The record’s been in circulation for a bit, but will receive its official release via MFR.
    • Making Up The Truth, White Air’s follow-up to their self-titled album, is being mastered and should be ready for an April release (maybe the 16th, Record Store Day).

    See you!  -h

  • Live Set & Breakfast Next Saturday

I’ll be playing next Saturday, Oct. 9, from 8-10 AM for Community Assistance’s Council‘s Flapjack Fundraiser at the Applebee’s at Truman Corners, Grandview, MO.

    From the press release:

Community Assistance Council is announcing the start of a new program for transitional housing in south Kansas City. Seeds of Hope, an area home purchased by CAC, will allow a family time to live in the home, while working with a case manager to develop life skills and stabilize finances with the goal of reaching self-sufficiency in six to nine months.

“There’s been such a need in this area for transitional housing. Currently, families that want to live in this area, but have credit issues or other barriers that keep them from renting or owning a home have only local motels to stay at,” Carol Bird Owsley, Executive Director of CAC, said.

… St. Luke’s [United Methodist Church] started a pledge drive with its membership and has hosted numerous fundraisers to raise the money needed to purchase the home … Community Assistance Council is now hosting its own Flapjack Fundraiser on Saturday, October 9, at the Applebee’s at Truman Corners, from 8-10am.

CAC staff and volunteers with help from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church volunteers, will cook and serve breakfast, which will include pancakes, eggs and sausage, as well as a beverage for $7/person. There will even be musical entertainment provided by Howie Howard from Mr. Furious Records (www.mrfuriousrecords.com). Proceeds will be used to pay for ongoing expenses the first year, such as insurance, taxes and utilities. “Eventually, the program will be able to fund itself,” Owsley stated. “But the first year costs need to be met.”

Tickets for the Flapjack Fundraiser can be purchased in advance at Community Assistance Council, 10901 Blue Ridge Boulevard, or at the door. More information regarding Seeds of Hope, the breakfast or CAC can be provided by calling the agency, 816-763-3277.

  • MFR site update

Hi, I’m starting a massive site update that will be unfolding over the coming weeks.

You can always visit the current site here; I’ll have to take the automatic re-direct down when I’m working on the new one, which is what’s happening if you’re reading this.

Thanks for your patience; music should be available throughout the update. -h

  • The Sleepover's "Oceans of Ice, Island of Terror" Available!

Lone Prairie Records has released Cory & Co.‘s latest effort on CD; messages from Cory below.

Hello, all! As promised/threatened, I am sending this e-mail out once more to remind you about the CD release shows, and to let you know that the CD is now available for purchase online through Lone Prairie Records! To buy one for a mere $10, just go here!:

    http://loneprairierecords.com/?page_id=4

From that page, you can click on four of the songs which will take you to our reverb nation page for streamings. But really, go buy this CD. You will be shocked and amazed and maybe even a little bit more fashionable.

Hope to see you at the CD release shows! If not, make haste and snag a copy as soon as you’re able :)

    Cory + The Sleepover

    And:

I thought I’d send out this review from lazy-i.com to everyone who worked on the record: it’s pretty dang complimentary, I would say!

    (The Sleepover review link)
I tried to talk up everyone who worked on the record equally in the e-mail I sent him, but I think he mentioned Eric on account of the resumé. But either way, he praises the production value very highly, which speaks really well to Chris, Eric, and Howie! And he seems to like the songs, which is rad. My favorite quote is when he’s talking about our record and the Scott Severin record, and he says, “The only way this record could be more opposite from Severin’s is if it incorporated a gay choir and an orchestra of vuvzelas.” I love it!

    Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

    Cory

The gang worked this record hardcore, and it shows.  Cory’s voice has never sounded so good, the arrangements are beautiful, and I’m proud to have played my part in it, too. -h

  • Thanks Astrus

Hey, Gordon Shumway!” from Arturo Got The Shaft’s “A Life Without Fireflies” is fixed.  Sorry for the poor audio – I don’t know how long the archive.org file has been cut at about 0:56 – and thanks to commenter Astrus for alerting us.

  • SWPR Soup Cook-Off Saturday

    From the press release:
“Songwriter Power Ranger was an acoustic concert series that started in spring 2009 and ran through the autumn of that same year.  It was a beautiful partnership between two Lincoln music-scene veterans (Cory Kibler and Ember Schrag) and Box Awesome/The Bourbon Theatre. It was named so, because these gatherings of local songwriters resembled the coming together of the Power Rangers to create one enormous, crime-fighting robot, only with songs and drinks instead of karate-chopping and explosions.

swpr.jpg“The series brought in many beloved regional acts (Sarah Benck, John Walker, Brad Hoshaw, Midwest Dilemma, Dereck Higgins, et al) as well as a few nationally known artists (Ali Harter, Jake Bellows).  The shows were fun and lighthearted, and had a charming, earnest sense of music and community.  Also, there were crazy drinks from zany bartenders.

“On Saturday, March 27th at the Bourbon Theatre (1415 “O” Street), Songwriter Power Ranger will make its glorious return for one night only, and the cover is a mere $6.  There will also be a soup cook-off, and Bourbon gift-certificates will be awarded for those who place 1st, 2nd and 3rd: just bring a crockpot full of your soup, and let the crowd pick its favorites.  The soup cook-off begin at 5 pm, and the music begins at 6 pm and ends at 9 pm.  Consider this a Lincoln Music Event in line with the wildly successful “Under the Covers” event held at Duffy’s back in January.

Performing are Cleemann (Denmark), Rob Hawkins (former Golden Age), Das Hoboerotica, Ember Schrag, Cory Kibler (The Sleepover), and Chanty Stovall.

“Thank you very much for your time, and please let Ember (ember.schrag@gmail.com) or me (cory.kibler@gmail.com) know if you have any questions.  We hope you’re able to post the press release/spread the word, and we’d (of course) love to see a story or five written about the event.  We want to make it a huge success!

    “Sincerely,
    Cory Kibler”

  • Drive-By Honky and M/S Ride’s “There is Something and not nothing” Release Date: October 31

    Why not Halloween?

Two years in the making, Sally M/S Ride’s third release* will post at the end of next month.  The album is 99% finished; all that remains are some final mixing tweaks.

We’re also honored to be re-releasing Drive-By Honky’s “Double Live Platinum” EP (which is none of the three adjectives of its title) this Saturday.  DBH is a Lincoln, NE indie institution, and this out-of-print EP is a welcome addition to our Little Label That Could.

    Upcoming releases:

    • October 3 – Drive-By Honky, “Double Live Platinum” EP
    • October 31 – M/S Ride, “There is Something and not nothing”
    • December 5 – MFR’s XMAS compilation, featuring Scott Morris’ “Hush Hush” new for 2009
    • January 2 – White Air, “White Air”
    • February 6 – M/S Ride, “Furious Instance” – Two demos from “…not nothing;” “Deft” and “Can U Feel It?”
    • In the works: The Golden Age full-length, Sally M/S Ride’s “You Have To Wear The Boots,” Fifty Bears in a Fight

“There is Something and not nothing” – It’s poppy and a little tough, with some dance influence.  Ten songs.

Matt from Five Star Crush played drums for me, and killed it.  His drums were in my bedroom for most of the two years.

It’s about dancing and struggling with infinity.  I love it dearly and I hope you will, too.  -h

*Third release, but fifth album written.  Recordings of “Ventura” (3) and “You Have To Wear The Boots” (4) are in-progress, with “…Boots” to follow “…not nothing” in 2010.

  • Lincoln, NE – Songwriter Power Ranger Series: AUGUST

This month, we have a slew of excellent performers for you (see attached). As always, it’s 6:30 – 9 pm at the Bourbon Theatre, located on “O” Street in between 14th and 15th on the South side of the street, right next to Yia Yia’s.

This month, there will be no SWPR on Monday August 10th as there will be another show going on that night. However, SWPR will resume on Monday, August 17th with Ali Harter, Ingrid Blood (Teal from UUVVWWZ) and Zane Peters (The Candle Simon). Cover is $4, gitcher beer, gitcher bourbon, gitchee some coffee, and come rock out. F*ck, tell all your friends! The atmosphere is cozy and low key. The chairs are comfortable. The drinks are weird and delicious. The lighting is downright welcoming.

As the month goes on, reminders about shows will happen as they happen. Remember to show up in a revealing burlap sack, and you will receive one (1) free drawing of a horse, provided you are not a horse yourself.

    Come rock with us!

    Love,

Cory, Ember and the Bourbon. And BJ and the Bear. And Turner and Hooch.

  • Counting Down to 11/23

On November 23 a long-delayed, over budget, highly anticipated, epic album from a reclusive, eccentric rock star will finally be released to the world.

That album is “A Life Without Fireflies” by Arturo Got The Shaft, and Mr. Furious Records will release it for free to download, stream, trade, burn, and share at midnight on 11/23 as a punk rock middle finger to Axl Rose, “Chinese Democracy,” and the culture of commercialism, trivia, and decadence they represent.

    Tracklist:

    1. Prologue / Silent Sparkle

    2. Pants and Backpacks

    3. Only Way She Knows How

    4. Open Eyes

    5. I Love You Too

    6. Something Transcendent

    7. Imagine Nations

    8. Still a Princess

    9. Like a Dreamer
    10. Hey! Gordon Shumway

In addition Rob and howie are working on a new recording of “25d” for the 2008 release of “XMAS,” and bonus track “Blame it on the Beer” will appear soon on “Furious Instance.”
